Gexa Energy Pricing: Rates You Can Expect to Pay
Gexa Energy’s rates depend on the plan you choose, your contract length, how much electricity you use each month, and which utility delivers power to your address. Many of Gexa’s lowest advertised rates come from bill credit plans, which reach that rate only in months when your usage meets the credit threshold. Read each plan’s Electricity Facts Label (EFL) at 500, 1,000 and 2,000 kWh before you enroll.
In our marketplace, the lowest electricity rate that Gexa Energy offers is [lowest rate] per kWh. The [featured plan] plan is offered in a [term] contract and includes [plan features]. The early termination fee is [ETF]. The price details are:

How Gexa Energy Compares With the Average Marketplace Rate
Across all [plan count] Gexa plans in our marketplace for this ZIP code, the blended average rate is [Gexa average] per kWh at 1,000 kWh, against an Average Marketplace Rate of [marketplace average]. That blend includes Gexa’s bill credit plans and its higher-priced fixed and specialty plans, so individual plans range widely around it. Compare the specific plan you are considering in the table above.
Why Your Gexa Bill Might Be Higher Than the Advertised Rate
The rate in a plan’s headline applies at one usage level. Four things can make a Gexa bill higher than that number suggests, and none of them is unique to Gexa.
- Bill credits are all or nothing. On a bill credit plan, the advertised rate assumes you earn the credit. The [featured plan] above prices at [rate at 1,000 kWh] per kWh at 1,000 kWh but [rate at 500 kWh] at 500 kWh, because a mild month that falls short of the threshold loses the whole credit.
- Minimum usage. Some plans charge a penalty if you use less than a specified amount of electricity per month, often 1,000 kWh.
- Delivery charges. Utility delivery fees include a base charge and a per kWh rate. These charges are regulated, apply to all plans equally, and typically update twice per year. They appear on every bill as TDU delivery charges.
- Contract timing. Low-rate, short-term plans often expire in high-demand months, forcing renewal at peak prices. A plan that ends in July or January renews into the most expensive months of the year.
Check the EFL at the usage level closest to your own, and note your contract end date when you enroll.
Who Is Gexa Energy? Company Background & Highlights
Gexa Energy was founded in Houston in 2001 and began serving customers when the Texas electricity market opened to competition in 2002, which makes it one of the state’s original retail electricity providers. It operates as Gexa Energy, LP under PUCT Certificate No. 10027 and has been a subsidiary of NextEra Energy since FPL Group, now NextEra Energy, acquired Gexa Corp. in June 2005. Gexa uses the slogan Texans serving Texans™ and says it has served more than 1.8 million Texas households since 2001 [VERIFY: still current at publish], including in Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth and Corpus Christi. Here are Gexa Energy’s main highlights:
- Gexa offers competitive electricity plans designed for all types of customers and usage habits
- New residential customers can switch to another eligible Gexa plan once within the first 60 days of service without a penalty, under Gexa’s Happiness Guarantee
- Offers contracts from 8 to 36 months
- All residential plans have been 100% renewable since November 2020
- Beyond electricity plans, Gexa Energy provides complete solar energy solutions, including rooftop solar panel installations [VERIFY: current offering]
- Gexa proudly partners with local organizations to help the communities it serves
What Customers Are Saying About Gexa Energy
Power Wizard’s rating for Gexa Energy combines customer feedback from third-party review platforms, industry data and our own analysis. Gexa scores highest for its online tools and range of plans, and slightly lower for customer service. The two sections below explain what customers praise and where they report problems.
| Overall PowerWizard Score | Rating Scale (1-5) |
|---|---|
| Overall Score | 4.83 [VERIFY: ratings owner] |
| Customer Service | 4.5 |
| Online Accessibility | 5 |
| Plan Options | 5 |
Ratings are based on a scale of 1 through 5, with 5 being the highest. These scores are determined by Power Wizard’s comprehensive evaluation of customer feedback, industry data, and our own expert analysis.
Gexa’s overall score of 4.83 reflects perfect ratings for online accessibility and plan options, with customer service at 4.5. Most of the criticism behind that score concerns billing and contract renewal rather than enrollment.
What Customers Praise About Gexa Energy
Reviewers on Google, Yelp and Trustpilot [VERIFY: platforms consulted] often mention friendly, attentive customer service and how easy Gexa’s website and app are to use. Gexa’s 60-day Happiness Guarantee also comes up: new residential customers can move to another eligible Gexa plan once in their first 60 days without a penalty. Long-tenured customers point to Gexa’s history in Texas and to its renewable plans, which do not require solar panels or any equipment at home.
Where Customers Report Problems With Gexa Energy
The most repeated complaint concerns what happens when a contract ends. Gexa sends expiration notices before the end date, but a customer who does not choose a new plan moves automatically onto a month-to-month variable rate, which can be much higher than the rate they signed up for. That product can be canceled at any time without a fee, so the fix is to act on the notice.
The second theme is bills that rise without an obvious cause, usually on bill credit plans in a month when usage falls short of the credit threshold, or in summer when a short contract renews at peak prices. Some customers also report difficulty interpreting billing statements.
Before you enroll, read the EFL at the 500, 1,000 and 2,000 kWh usage levels, and put your contract end date in your calendar.

A Closer Look at Gexa Energy’s Electricity Plans
If you live in a coastal city like Corpus Christi, you likely have different energy needs than someone living in a landlocked city like Fort Worth. Because of this, Gexa Energy offers flexible plans to suit your way of life. Just remember to review each plan’s Electricity Facts Label (EFL) for rates, usage tiers, and other terms before making a commitment.
Fixed-Rate Plans
Fixed-rate plans lock in your electricity rate for the duration of your contract, typically 12, 24, or 36 months. That means your price per kilowatt-hour won’t change, even if market rates go up. It’s a good fit for anyone who wants consistency in their monthly bills.
Pros:
- Stable rates that won’t change during your contract
- Easier to budget your electricity costs
- Protection from seasonal price spikes
Cons:
- Early cancellation fees if you end the contract early
- Less flexibility to switch plans mid-term
- May miss out on lower prices if market rates drop

Bill Credit Plans
Gexa Energy’s bill credit plans apply a credit to your bill in any month your usage reaches the plan’s threshold, which can lower your overall energy costs. The credit amount and threshold are stated on each plan’s EFL; on several current Gexa plans the credit is [credit amount] at [threshold] kWh or more. If your usage falls short of the threshold, you do not receive the credit that month. These plans may work for households with predictable, high monthly usage. Available in: several contract lengths
Pros:
- Can offer monthly savings
- May work for households with steady, predictable consumption
- Fixed rates simplify budgeting
Cons:
- ETFs may apply
- No credit if you don’t use the right amount of electricity

Free Weekends
Gexa’s Free 3-Day Weekends plan charges nothing for energy from 12 a.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Monday, 72 hours every weekend. Gexa states that delivery charges are also $0 during the free hours [VERIFY: on the plan’s EFL]. Energy used outside that window is priced higher to pay for the free hours, so the plan may work for households that can shift laundry, cooking and other heavy usage to Friday through Sunday. Learn more about time-of-use plans.
Pros:
- Free electricity for 72 hours every weekend
- Useful for charging an electric vehicle or running heavy appliances on weekends
- It can lower your bill if you manage usage carefully
Cons:
- Peak-hour rates can be high
- You need to change when you use electricity to really save
- It can be harder to estimate your bill each month

| Free 3 Day Weekends Preferred 12 | 20.1¢ | $201.00 | 12 mos. | Choose Plan |

EV Electricity Plans
Gexa’s SavEV 12 and SavEV 24 plans are built for electric vehicle owners who charge at home overnight. They charge $0 for energy used between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. [VERIFY: whole-home usage or EV charging only], 365 nights a year, when paired with Gexa365. Standard TDU delivery charges still apply. The discount applies to compatible vehicles only: Gexa publishes a list of supported makes, so confirm your vehicle is on it before you enroll. Learn more about EV electricity plans.
Available in: 12-month and 24-month contract terms.
Pros:
- Can make at-home charging more cost-effective
- Fixed rates for greater predictability
- Easy to track charging habits through the Gexa mobile app
Cons:
- Includes an ETF
- Savings depend on aligning charging habits with the plan structure
- Only compatible vehicles qualify for the overnight discount
Renewable Energy Plans
Since November 2020, all of Gexa Energy’s residential plans have been 100% renewable. Gexa matches the electricity its customers use with renewable energy credits from wind and solar generation, so you do not need to install panels or change anything at home.
Renewable energy plans give Texas residents the opportunity to support cleaner energy without changing their electricity use. These plans help reduce emissions by supporting investments in renewable energy projects, such as wind and solar, instead of fossil fuels. It’s an easy way to make a difference.
A renewable plan describes what is purchased on your behalf, not the electricity that reaches your home. Your home draws the same power from the same grid as your neighbors; the renewable content is counted through those credits. Every Texas plan states its renewable percentage on its EFL.
Pros:
- All plans support clean energy
- No extra setup or equipment needed
- Helps reduce your carbon footprint
Cons:
- Renewable status alone does not make a plan cheaper or more expensive; compare rates the same way you would for any plan
- Business plans are not automatically renewable; commercial customers choose green options separately [VERIFY]

Pros:
- Includes helpful perks like smart home devices
- It can help you save energy long-term
- Adds more value without extra effort
Cons:

Solar Buyback Plans
Gexa Energy’s solar buyback plans let homeowners with rooftop solar earn bill credits for the eligible excess electricity their systems send back to the grid. Those credits can help offset the cost of the electricity you use from the grid, making these plans a practical option for getting more value from your solar investment.
Gexa credits your eligible exports at the Excess Energy Credit rate stated on the plan’s EFL [VERIFY: rate and any cap]. Unused credits roll over from month to month, but any balance left when you close the account is forfeited, so the plans work best when your exports and your usage are roughly in balance over a year. Gexa also offers a battery add-on for some solar homes [VERIFY: current name, credit and eligible batteries].
Available in: 12-month contracts [VERIFY: no 24-month solar plan]
Pros:
- Helps homeowners maximize their solar system investment
- Bill credits can offer monthly savings
- No additional special equipment needed
Cons:
- Homes must already have solar panels installed
- Credits may not match wholesale rates
- Generally not ideal for households with low solar output
| Plan Name | ¢/kWh | Est. Bill | Term | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gexa Solar Export Saver 12 | 18.4¢ | $184.00 | 12 mos. | Choose Plan |

How to Choose the Best Gexa Energy Plan
- Start with your usage. If your home uses at least the credit threshold every month, including spring and fall, a bill credit plan may work for you. If your usage swings, a fixed-rate plan without a credit is easier to predict.
- Check the EFL at three usage levels. Read the price at 500, 1,000 and 2,000 kWh, not only the one in the headline.
- Pick a contract end month. An 8- or 10-month plan signed in the fall ends in summer. If you can, choose a term that ends in spring or fall.
- EV owners: SavEV is worth comparing if you charge overnight and your vehicle is on Gexa’s compatible list.
- Solar owners: compare the buyback credit rate against how much your panels typically export, and remember unused credits are forfeited when you leave.
- Weekend-heavy households: Free 3-Day Weekends may work if most of your usage falls between Friday and Sunday.
Then enter your ZIP code to compare the Gexa plans available at your address.

Gexa Energy’s Role in Your Texas Electricity Service
In deregulated Texas, the company that sells you electricity and the company that delivers it are different businesses. Here is who does what.
| Role | Who | Responsibility | What this means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retail Electric Provider (REP) | Gexa Energy | Sets rates, builds plans, handles billing and customer service | Compare plans, read the EFL, enroll, renew or switch through Gexa |
| Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU) | Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas Central, AEP Texas North or TNMP, depending on your address; Lubbock Power & Light in Lubbock | Delivers power, maintains lines and meters, restores outages | Contact your utility for outages and downed lines, not Gexa |
| Grid operator | ERCOT | Manages statewide grid reliability | Not a billing or service contact |
Should You Choose Gexa Energy? Here’s How to Decide
Not sure if Gexa Energy is the best fit for your household? If any of the following apply to you, the company’s plans may fit your needs:
- You want every plan option to be 100% renewable, without needing solar panels of your own
- You prefer fixed-rate pricing for predictable monthly bills
- You’re interested in perks like smart thermostats or bill credits
- You live in a deregulated part of Texas
- You use more than 1,000 kWh/month and want to earn usage-based bill credits
- You value responsive customer service and easy-to-use online tools
- You charge an EV at home overnight and your vehicle is on Gexa’s SavEV compatible list
Consider other options if:
- You need live phone support in the evening or on Sundays. Gexa’s live team works Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central.
- Your usage swings a lot from month to month, which makes bill credit thresholds harder to hit.
- You want a prepaid or no-deposit plan. Gexa does not offer one.
If you are switching to Gexa from another provider, check your current plan’s EFL for its early termination fee and contract end date.
You can shop around and switch providers at the end of your contract. ETFs may apply if you leave early.
ETFs do not apply if you are moving, even if your contract has not been fulfilled.
ETFs do not apply to anyone in the last two weeks of their electricity contract.
Gexa Energy FAQs
Is Gexa Energy a good company?
Gexa Energy has a Power Wizard score of 4.83 out of 5, with perfect ratings for online accessibility and plan options and a 4.5 for customer service. Its strengths are a long Texas history (founded in Houston in 2001), a wide plan range that includes EV, solar buyback and free weekends plans, 100% renewable residential plans, and a 60-day Happiness Guarantee for new customers. The most common complaints concern contract renewal, where customers who miss their expiration notice move onto a higher month-to-month rate, and bill credit plans, where a month below the usage threshold loses the credit. Whether Gexa fits you depends on your usage pattern and how closely you track your contract end date.
How do I contact Gexa Energy?
You can reach Gexa Energy’s residential customer service by calling 1-866-961-9399 or 713-961-9399. Their support hours are Monday-Friday, 7:00 am – 8:00 pm, and Saturday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (Central Time).
How long has Gexa Energy been in business?
Gexa Energy was founded in Houston in 2001 and began serving customers in 2002, when the Texas electricity market opened to competition. It has been part of NextEra Energy since 2005 and is licensed by the PUCT as Gexa Energy, LP under Certificate No. 10027.
Who owns Gexa Energy?
Gexa Energy is a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, Inc. FPL Group, now NextEra Energy, acquired Gexa Corp. in June 2005. Gexa continues to operate under its own brand in Texas.
Is Gexa cheaper than TXU?
It depends on the plans you compare and how much electricity you use. Both providers sell bill credit plans that are priced lowest at 1,000 kWh and fixed-rate plans without a credit, and their rates differ by service area and change often. Compare the specific plans available at your address at your own usage level, using each plan’s EFL. For a side-by-side look at the two providers, see our Gexa vs. TXU comparison.
What happens when my Gexa Energy contract ends?
Gexa sends expiration notices before your contract ends, the last at least 30 days before the end date. If you do not choose a new plan, your service continues on a month-to-month variable rate, which can be significantly higher than your contract rate. You can cancel that month-to-month product without a fee. You can shop around and switch providers at the end of your contract. ETFs may apply if you leave early. ETFs do not apply to anyone in the last two weeks of their electricity contract.
Does Gexa Energy have cancellation fees?
Yes. Gexa Energy may charge an early termination fee (ETF) if you cancel a fixed-rate plan before it ends. The amount varies by plan and term and is listed on your plan’s EFL; on Gexa’s EV plans it ranges from $150 to $295. ETFs do not apply if you are moving, even if your contract has not been fulfilled, and they do not apply to anyone in the last two weeks of their electricity contract. New customers can also use Gexa’s 60-day Happiness Guarantee to change plans without a penalty.
Does Gexa Energy offer same day service?
With Gexa Energy, you can start electricity service the same day. If you’re moving to a new address and request same-day service after 11:00 AM, your order may be processed as a Priority Move-In, which includes an additional TDU fee. If you’re simply switching from another electricity provider, the same-day enrollment cutoff is 4:00 PM. Please note that same-day service may require additional qualifications, such as a digital meter.
Does Gexa Energy run a credit check?
Yes, Gexa Energy performs a soft credit check during enrollment. Customers with lower credit scores may be required to pay a deposit. However, some individuals may be eligible for a deposit waiver.
Does Gexa Energy offer renewable energy plans?
Yes. All of Gexa Energy’s residential plans have been 100% renewable since November 2020. Gexa matches its customers’ electricity use with renewable energy credits from wind and solar generation, so no solar panels or equipment are needed.
What is the 24-month plan for Gexa Energy?
Gexa Energy offers several 24-month fixed-rate plans. One option is the Eco Saver Plus 24, which provides a $125 bill credit [VERIFY: current EFL] when monthly usage exceeds 1,000 kWh.
Can I change my Gexa Energy plan?
If you are a new residential customer, Gexa Energy allows you to switch to another residential plan within 60 days of starting service without an early termination fee. After 60 days, changing plans may incur a fee. Your contract term restarts with the new plan, and the guarantee applies once.
Does Gexa Energy offer electricity for businesses?
Yes, Gexa Energy offers electricity plans for businesses of all sizes across Texas. Their commercial plans include fixed-rate, market index, and green energy options, along with dedicated account support. Businesses can also choose custom contract lengths and access tools to manage and optimize their energy use.
Does Gexa Energy have a satisfaction guarantee policy?
Yes. Under Gexa’s 60-day Happiness Guarantee, a new residential customer who contacts Gexa within 60 days of starting service can switch to any eligible Gexa plan without a penalty. It applies one time, and your contract term restarts with the new plan. It is a plan change within Gexa, not a penalty-free cancellation.
What is Gexa Energy’s BBB rating?
Gexa Energy holds a [VERIFY: rating] rating from the Better Business Bureau [VERIFY: accreditation status and date]. BBB ratings reflect how a business responds to complaints, not the price or quality of its plans, so read them alongside the PUCT complaint data on this page.
Who do I call during a Gexa Energy power outage?
Call your local utility, not Gexa. In Texas, the utility that delivers your electricity restores outages and repairs lines, whichever retail provider you use. That is Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas, Texas-New Mexico Power or Lubbock Power & Light, depending on your address, and the utility’s outage number is printed on your Gexa bill. If you are not sure which utility serves you, use our ESID lookup tool.
Is Gexa Energy available in my area?
Gexa Energy serves deregulated Texas in the five Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU) service territories: Oncor Electric Delivery, CenterPoint Energy, AEP Texas Central, AEP Texas North and Texas-New Mexico Power (TNMP). It also sells plans in the part of Lubbock that Lubbock Power & Light, a municipally owned utility, has opened to retail competition. Gexa does not serve areas covered only by a municipally owned utility or co-op, such as Austin (Austin Energy) or San Antonio (CPS Energy). To confirm availability, enter your ZIP code, and use our ESID lookup tool if your ZIP is served by more than one utility.
