Flooring Calculator
Enter your room's width and length in feet, and the price per square foot of the floor you are considering. The calculator gives you the square footage, the square footage with 10% added for cutting and waste, and an approximate cost.

How to Measure a Room for New Flooring
- Measure the longest and widest points of the room. Measure halfway into every doorway, since the new floor runs under the door.
- Add at least 3 inches to both the width and the length. That leaves enough for cutting and trimming.
- For carpet, round the width up to the roll width. Most carpet comes in 12-foot rolls, and about 90% of carpet is 12 feet wide. Some styles also come in 13' 6" or 15' widths, so check the specifications of the style you have chosen. You buy the full width of the roll, so a 10' x 10' room in a 12-foot carpet needs a 12' x 10' piece: enter 12 for the width and 10 for the length, which is 120 square feet. If both the width and the length of a room are wider than the roll, the carpet will need to be cut to fit and seamed.
- Add the pattern repeat. If the carpet or vinyl has a pattern match, add the full length of one pattern repeat to the length of the room.
- Add 10% for waste, which the calculator does for you.
Measuring Questions
How much extra flooring should I order?
Add about 10% to your room's square footage for cutting and waste. The calculator above adds it for you. For carpet with a pattern, also add one full pattern repeat to the length.
How wide is carpet?
Most carpet is made in 12-foot widths, and about 90% of carpet is 12 feet wide. Some styles also come in 13' 6" and 15' widths, so check the specifications of the style you choose.
How do I convert a price per square yard to a price per square foot?
Divide the square yard price by 9. A carpet priced at $27 per square yard costs $3 per square foot. The calculator above will do this for you if you enter the square yard price.
Do I still need my rooms measured if I use the calculator?
Yes. The calculator gives an estimate. Have your installer measure your rooms before you order, since room shape, seams and the flooring you choose all change how much material the job uses.
